28: Served

The team returns to Returning, the capital city within Peony’s province in Halflingland. Some sketchy stuff happens at a banquet, the team whoops on a minotaur, and it turns out some lawful-evil schmuck is trying to weasel his way into the throne. Darn antipaladins.

Meanwhile, an Aerumarian bodyguard called Gerald Selmy arrives to discuss military support.

"I killed someone!"

The team investigates a fire in the distance, and capture/kill two monk arsonists employed by Sirona‘s cult. Peony and Litzy discover that the owners of the house now in ruins are estranged relatives of Strelitzia’s family who recently escaped the chaos in Aerumar.

Following Sirona’s guide (and Charlotte’s darkvision), they enter into the crypt that serves as a base of operations for the cult. After being discovered poking a mysterious statue, Ammon gets caught up in his own bluff and tries to join the cult.

Following an undeadly battle with the lich Elder Monk during which the mule had an apparent-instadeath experience, Ammon eagerly donned a cursed necklace. He was promptly electrocuted while choking.

23: Tipping the Scales

Efaria and Sirona meet for the first time in a crowded street outside Royal, Aerumar. They join up with a trio of adventurers and, after a few arguments, head off to “save” Lykosa from the kobolds that are in the process of taking over the nation. Lykosa (alongside McKnuckles) reaches the castle and is joined by three other women contending for the crown, one of whom had been already murdered and one of whom was secretly a dragon.

Dinner led to duelling led to a battle with the murderous-and-rather-hungry chromatic green dragon Emerald. Following her defeat at the hands of Peony, Ammon and the other adventurers, the Cobalt family conflict was resolved by McKnuckles marrying his cousin McKaia. Aerumar is now under considerably less benign rule as an annexation of Cobalt. Presumably, there are neither strings nor enchantments attached to this precarious resolution. Nevertheless, the party is favored by the mother of the king and so as gratitude for slaying the dragon they are allowed to continue adventuring rather than being enslaved or eaten. For now.

26: Stealthcasting

Alice and crew loot the phytomancer’s fortress and rescue the merfolk druids being held in the dungeon below. Peony returns to the capital for some official business, and Ammon chases after his wayward mule. The rest push on toward Glitterlake, the home of the druids and Alice’s mentor.

While in town, they come across a gnomish merchant who blatantly refuses to adhere to Halflingland’s anti-magic laws. Alice evades suspicion with the help of Charlotte and a Disguise Self potion, but the merchant is arrested. Sirona and Charlotte break off to follow the prisoner— and a well-placed zoog causes both the spell and the horses to bolt.

Meanwhile, Efaria and the others push onward, their path blocked by a pair of dire boars. The monsters are no match, however, and by the time the others catch up the party is gathered around a fire roasting pork up for lunch.

Peony sets out to Vorpal Village in order to make sure the whole evil necromancer thing doesn’t burst into a full-fledged scandal. There, she reunites with Strelitzia, Charlotte, and Ammon along with their new merfolk associate. After hearing the rousing testimony of another escaped merfolk captive, Peony and crew (including newcomers Sirona and Efaria) assemble to investigate the dark fortress at the edge of the woods.

The expedition runs less smoothly than planned, as the party finds itself separated in a giant tree-like structure full of the necromancer’s undead minions. Ultimately, the party’s wide array of talents brought the evil wizard down, albeit by the skin of their teeth and with no clear explanation for his actions…
